Is a Christ Centered Life Restrictive?

By David P.

I believe that living a life centered around the teachings of Jesus Christ enables us to have a more free, enjoyable, and less restrictive life.  This often comes as a surprise when I mention it to others.  They point to the many rules I live by which could be viewed as restrictive, such as going to church weekly, abstaining from premarital sex, or donating ten percent of my income to the Church.

In following the plan of Jesus Christ we enable ourselves the opportunity to gain freedom. When we sin, we restrict ourselves from the blessings the Lord is prepared to give in accordance with our obedience and we add obstacles between ourselves and God.

In living a Christ-like life, we are following the path that Christ showed for us to be happy and to be with God after this life.  Through repeated living of the gospel of Jesus Christ, one can be more fully entitled to God’s blessings.  2 Nephi 9:39 states, “Remember, to be carnally-minded is death, and to be spiritually-minded is life eternal.” If we can make this our quest, God will bless us.

A former prophet of the Church, President Ezra Taft Benson, put it most poignantly when he said, “When obedience ceases to be an irritant and becomes our quest, in that moment God will endow us with power.”

I hope that we can realize that following Christ will bring happiness to our lives.  I know that in my life I have been blessed as I have strived to align my living in accordance with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Thanks for this. Friends often wonder about, and sometimes ask, the same things in regard to my faith. Obedience brings blessings.
