Folding Pages

I have recently started folding pages.  It’s like origami, but uses entire books.  My most recent endeavor is shown above.  It’s an old CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics.  It took me around eleven hours to do the more than 10,000 folds necessary to make it look just the way I wanted. As my wife can sadly attest to, I tend to have conversations with inanimate objects.  And with eleven hours to kill, that book and I had some lengthy conversations.  The main one went something ...

Wired for Learning: Promoting Infant Brain Development

Newborns come into the world with sophisticated brains that are phenomenally wired for intellectual growth. During the first year of life, they are more impressionable and able to develop than at any other time in life. This cognitive development affects them for the rest of their lives. Can Suffering Lead to Growth

By Andrew R. I remember the summer before I became a senior in high school. I had a very good friend who quite enjoyed hiking. As invincible 17-year-old “men,” we thought that this would be an easy task to undertake. The first day of the hike the three of us set out full of energy and feeling very ambitious. I remember reflecting how we were able to climb with ease a...

Then, Elmer’s glue.   My first graders read me the directions and then helped roll out the dough and use the gingerbread cookie cutter. We carefully laid out hundreds of miniature ornaments on every flat surface of our classroom, flipped them every few hours to dry evenly, decorated each one-by-one, and then added a ribbon. After a week of tender care and with mounting anticipation, my young le...

Are Christmas and Spiritual Growth Linked?

By Anonymous The very essence of Christmas is a reminder of the better spiritual things in life. It is a time of good-doing, self-giving, heart-warming experiences that uplift others as well as ourselves. I once heard a wise man say that “our opportunities to give of ourselves are limitless”. This rings true particularly between the fourth week of November to the 25th of December. During this time there are countless moments to give to others. We give to others, but ultimately we give to G...
