Parking Lot Etiquette

Is there such a thing? I think we can all agree there is. Waiting patiently for someone to pull out of a spot so we can take the spot with our vehicle – no screaming or yelling – quietly waiting our turn. There seems to be an unwritten rule about this – something to do with old-fashioned courtesy. But what if the following happens? One day I was leaving a Kinkos and walking out to my car. The lot was full, and there was a car parked directly in front of mine (see above). The lot...

City Nicknames and Slogans

by Merrill It seems like most towns have slogans or nicknames. New York City is the Big Apple, Chicago is the Windy City, Detroit is Motown, and San Diego is known as America’s Finest City. Some towns or places describe their products – Silicon Valley, Artichoke Capital of the World, Valley of the Sun, etc. But not all cities have nicknames or slogans, so I thought I could help out. Here is list I’ve come up with. Feel free to use any of them. ¤ Land of Frostbite ¤ ¤ Home of t...

by Merrill When I decided to write my blog I had to come up with a title. So I tossed around several ideas, hoping to reflect my life experience. Birth, Life, Death – Three Easy Steps

by Merrill Aging is a peculiar phenomenon. It occurs without our permission or approval, it doesn’t happen quickly enough when we are young, goes way too fast when we are old, and we are unaware of its presence while it is inflicting itself upon us. We are in a constant state of NOW – that thing you see in front of your eyes at any given moment. There’s really no past or future there’s always and only that thing we call NOW. At least that’s what happens to me. Meanwhile, life events...

Retirement Home Envy

by Merrill [Note:  We'll all be old some day (we hope), so it's important for us to be able to laugh at ourselves - Editor] It seems that Keeping Up With the Joneses continues on into the twilight years of life. My mother now lives in a very nice retirement facility and the first thing I noticed when I visited her were all the handicap spaces in the parking lot, which seems logical. On the other hand, how much driving should these octogenarians and nonagenarians be doing? Sadly, we ...

I Hate My Voice

By Merrill What does my voice really sound like? I don’t know. You tell me. Everybody else has. I would guess that the majority of people aren’t comfortable with the sound of their own voice, at least when they hear a recorded version. I’ve heard actors and actresses say they can’t bear to watch themselves on the screen. Check. I wouldn’t be able to do it either, but I haven’t been offered any acting jobs, so it’s a moot point. I’ve hated the sound of my voice my entire life, and I’...
