Understanding the concept of sacrifice is critical to family harmony. After having children, I learned that lesson. I no longer had some of the things I used to have before motherhood; a full night’s rest was often gone. Another lesson that became clear to me as a mother was you can’t give a good gift begrudgingly. This realization taught me patience. I’ve learned that sacrifice and patience are very important because they help me be a better mother.
Some may call this life a test. That test provides the challenge to overcome natural, selfish desires and help others; it is part of what is required in our earth life. I believe that in this world we are all family, sacrificing our time and efforts to help others gain truth and feel loved. This is doing God’s will. Showing love by sacrificing something for our family members will bring the blessings of heaven. “He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it” (Matthew 10:39). Getting lost in God’s work means reaching out and helping others. It becomes easier as we learn to sacrifice more frequently and without the sigh, “Do I have to?” Doing so draws us closer to family and to God.
Creating family harmony is not easy; it can bring us the greatest joy in life. Seeing babies smile or laugh for the first time, watching them overcome their fears, hearing them say they love you and smothering you with hugs and kisses are all special moments. These tender moments helped me to know that I made the right choice to have children. As we work hard to raise our children in righteousness, we grow closer to God.
Sacrifice has always been part of God’s plan for us. He has instructed us to offer up a broken heart, a contrite spirit, time, and efforts as fruits unto Him. Being children of God we are loved by a perfect Heavenly Father who sent His Only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, to sacrifice his life for us. This allows us to repent of our sins and live again as an eternal family. “Greater love hath no man than this that a man lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13).
As a mother, I have gratefully sacrificed many things for my children and have been blessed for doing so. I know of no greater blessing than having children in my life. Understanding this, along with who I am in God’s plan, helps me to overcome the obstacles Satan puts in my path. I am grateful beyond measure to be a part of a growing family. I also know that the bonds we create in this life will last forever and beyond – never to be forgotten.
